Hi, my name is Klara Maier and I’m an artist living in Bern, Switzerland. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved creating. At school, I always enjoyed art classes and during my other lessons I would often doodle in my notebooks. I’m mainly self-taught, although going to a Waldorf school helped set a basis for my skills.
I considered going to art school when I was a teenager, but decided against it in the end. For a long time, self-doubts and the fear never to be able to make a living with my art prevented me from pursuing art as a profession. I went on to study social work instead, worked with troubled teenagers and later with young moms and their infants. A while after that I completed an apprenticeship in gardening.
My interests have always been very wide ranging, my curiosity to learn new things has no end and I’ve had many jobs here and there (working as a waitress, a dog sitter or taking care of children). However, throughout my life my art has been a constant companion; it is like a good friend, that sticks with me through thick and thin. It is a comfort and a safe place to be when things get rough, and a form to express myself when words aren’t adequate. I draw what I feel and think and whatever is foremost in my mind. For this reason, my art is quite diverse; I like to experiment, using lots of color and mixing different mediums like watercolor, gouache, markers, brusho and ink.
The world around and inside me is what inspires me to create. It feels like a giant well from which I can endlessly scoop ideas. Lots of times I just sit down in front of a blank piece of paper and start creating without a clear plan in my mind, just letting it happen.
At around the age of 35, I decided to start posting my art online, which opened a whole new world. I got to know many wonderful fellow artists and steadily gained confidence in my own work. I also got to do my first exhibition, for which I created 10 pieces around the theme of periods, and for the first time I started selling my work.
Of course, there are days when I don’t feel like creating. These are days when I meet up with friends and family. I love to go on long walks to be in nature, to eat delicious vegan food, to read (manga and fiction) or to watch movies and anime. I also really enjoy travelling, especially to Japan, and taking lots of photos.
